Dumbest Generation?

As the age of technology is in effect, as Americans we find the newer generations are experts at mastering a cell phone, laptop, etc. but at the same time don't know all the Presidents. I do not take exception to this fact, personally I could tell you who won the last ten World Series, but could not tell you who won the 1856 election (James Buchanan), but as a Communications major specializing in sports radio it honestly feels more important to me to learn things more important to my field. Do not get me wrong general educations classes are extremely important to being well rounded human beings because it gives us knowledge in many subjects and we need them to succeed, but calling us the dumbest generation because we go on Facebook or send a few texts in over the top. While the generation above us may think we are the dumbest generation the generation before them probably thought they were the dumbest, the older one gets the more knowledge they obtain, so they forget exactly what they knew at the age of 18 as to what they know now, I can look back and confidently say I know so much more now than I did five years ago, and most likely when we are all thirty a good majority of us will think the same as the generation below us, its just a cycle.

  1. I think general education classes are important as well because they do keep us well rounded, and help us in ways we don't even know with our specialized areas of education. As you said Matt, I don't know who won the 1856 election either; however, I could name ever player and position they play of the Michigan football team. I think our generation chooses individualization over everything. Meaning that most of us are smart in the things we are interested in. If were not interested and need to learn or know something, we can use our technology to fall back on. I also agree with the fact that each generation is probably believed to be the "dumb" generation. Each generation before the next believes that the generation after them is dumb, or that their ideas are stupid, I think its just a way of life.

  2. The gen eds are important to an extent but what the hell did we spend 13 years in elementary, middle, and high schools for if not to learn those things? College is intended to be used to broaden your knowledge in an area you want to specialize in. I think the generation teaching us has failed us in that we don't know the same amount of history and whatnot that they do.

  3. I completely agree with Madison college is a time for specialization. Our generation also puts a lot of emphasis on education and most of us are encouraged to attend college. So why are we the dumbest generation again because we use technology? I was pretty sure that technology has made a lot of medical advances created jobs and benefited society as a whole.

  4. I like how you made the point that they've had more years to learn what we are just learning now. I, too, think that I know more now than I did a few years ago. Older generations need to realize that they don't know everything there is to either. Also, like Madison said, we spend so many years learning general education and now that we are in college we need to train for our future profession. It is important that we learn things in other subjects, but I don't think that anyone could know everything there is to know.

  5. General knowledge is important and I don't think any of us disagree with that, but I also don't believe any of really lack that either. We arn't dumb but we don't know everything and shouldn't be expected to. You are right our society is based off technology;that is what is important now.

  6. As you have all mentioned, we are in college to learn about one particular area of study. However, like Dr. Mortimore stated in class, our jobs are not going to be the only thing that defines us. It is not going to be your sole focus of your life. Yes, it will be extremely important and will most likely be a top priority; however, family, interests, etc. will also define who you are as a person. In regards to the technology statement someone made (about us being called dumb for using technology)--I don't think that is what anyone is saying. Bomberger poses the question, are we the dumbest generation, which is based off of what we use the technology for...
